GUSTAVO CISNEROS AND PATRICIA PHELPS DE CISNEROS RECEIVE AWARD FROM UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION OF UNITED STATES OF AMERICA FOR FUNDACIÓN CISNEROS EDUCATION PROGRAM
Gustavo A. Cisneros, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, the Cisneros Group of Companies, and Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, Founder and Chairman, Fundación Cisneros, tonight received the prestigious Global Leadership Award for Ensuring Environmental Sustainability from the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA). The award was among eight given by UNA-USA to honor non-profit organizations, businesses, and individuals who are effectively advancing the United Nations Millennium Goals.
The award was presented at the UNA-USA’s 50th Annual Global Leadership Awards Gala, in New York City. It specifically recognizes the Fundación Cisneros education program AME—Actualización de Maestros en Educación—for its special environmental curriculum. With this curriculum, AME trains teachers to instill environmental awareness in students, and to show them how to integrate this awareness into their daily lives.
Fundación Cisneros President Adriana Cisneros de Griffin said, “The Fundación Cisneros is delighted that its flagship education program AME has received this important recognition of its environmental curriculum. With AME, the Fundación is working to improve the quality of education for children throughout the Spanish-speaking world. To date, AME’s environmental curriculum alone has reached some 30,000 students, and that number is sure to grow as we continue and develop the program. We are grateful to the United Nations Association of the United States of America for this great honor.”
At the gala event, Gustavo and Patricia Cisneros accepted the award on behalf of the Fundación Cisneros. They were honored to be among the others who were recognized for their work in achieving the United Nations Millennium Goals. These include, in addition to Mr. and Mrs. Cisneros: Gregory J. Fleming, President and COO, Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc.; Dr. Lawrence B. Brilliant, executive director, Google.org; Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, hip-hop artist; the (RED)™ group of brands; Robin Hood Foundation; United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM); and Ted Turner, chairman, Untied Nations Foundation.
AME
The Fundación Cisneros, which is dedicated to improving education and promoting awareness of Latin America’s contributions to world culture, established AME in 1998. Offered free of charge, the program aims to improve the quality of teaching throughout Latin America. It combines the Internet with television to offer comprehensive professional-development courses for primary- and secondary-school teachers, working to improve their ability to offer instruction not only in the basic subjects, but in a broad range of areas that are critical to helping students become productive members of society.
To date, nearly 8,000 teachers and more than 900 schools in eleven countries have participated in AME, and the program’s certification is recognized by the regional and national educational authorities of Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela.
UNA-USA
The United Nations Association of the United States of America is a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to building understanding of and support for the ideals and vital work of the United Nations among the American people. Its educational and humanitarian campaigns, including teaching students in urban schools, clearing minefields, and providing school-based support for children living in HIV/AIDS-affected communities in Africa, allow people to make a global impact at the local level. In addition, its policy and advocacy programs stress the importance of nations working together and the need for United States leadership in the United Nations. The association is affiliated with the World Federation of United Nations Associations.
ASOCIACION DE LAS NACIONES UNIDAS GALARDONA PROGRAMA AME DE LA FUNDACION CISNEROS
El presidente de la Organización Cisneros, Gustavo A. Cisneros, y Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, Presidenta y Fundadora de la Fundación Cisneros, recibieron hoy el prestigioso galardón Global Leadership Award for Ensuring Environmental Sustainability (Liderazgo Global para Garantizar la Sustentabilidad Ambiental) de la Asociación de Naciones Unidas de los Estados Unidos de América (UNA-USA).
Este galardón figura entre otros ocho otorgados por la UNA-USA para rendir homenaje a las organizaciones sin fines de lucro, empresas e individuos que hayan obtenido avances en las Metas del Milenio de las Naciones Unidas.
El premio fue entregado durante la Quincuagésima Gala Anual de la UNA-USA en la ciudad de Nueva York. Este galardón reconoce específicamente a AME, (Actualización de Maestros en Educación), el programa educativo de la Fundación Cisneros, por su currículo en materia ambiental. Este currículo entrena a los maestros para que impartan conciencia entre los estudiantes y para que integren esta conciencia en sus vidas diarias.
La Presidenta de la Fundación Cisneros, Adriana Cisneros de Griffin, declaró: “La Fundación Cisneros se siente complacida de que su programa bandera en educación, AME, haya recibido este prestigioso reconocimiento por su currículo ambiental. Con AME la Fundación trabaja para mejorar la calidad de la educación en todo el mundo de habla hispana. Hasta ahora, el currículo ambiental de AME ha alcanzado a 30.000 estudiantes, y ese número se incrementará a medida que continuamos desarrollando el programa. Nos sentimos inmensamente agradecidos a la Asociación de Naciones Unidas de los Estados Unidos de América por este gran honor”.
Gustavo y Patricia Cisneros recibieron el premio a nombre de la Fundación Cisneros, durante la gala de la UNA-USA en la que también otras personalidades obtuvieron un reconocimiento por su trabajo en favor de las Metas del Milenio de las Naciones Unidas. Entre ellos: Gregory J. Fleming, Presidente y Jefe de Operaciones de Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc.; el Dr. Lawrence B. Brilliant, Director Ejecutivo de Google.org; Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, artista hip-hop; el grupo de marcas RED)(TM) ; la Fundación Robin Hood; El Fondo de las Naciones Unidas para la Mujer (UNIFEM); y Ted Turner, Presidente de la Fundación de Naciones Unidas.
AME
Dedicada a mejorar la educación y promover la conciencia de las contribuciones de América Latina a la cultura mundial, la Fundación Cisneros estableció AME en 1998.
El programa es completamente gratuito y busca mejorar la calidad de la enseñanza en toda América Latina. AME combina la internet con la televisión para brindar programas de desarrollo profesional para maestros de escuela primaria de modo que mejoren sus habilidades de enseñanza no sólo en materias básicas, sino en una amplia gama de áreas consideradas críticas, de modo que los alumnos puedan convertirse en integrantes productivos de la sociedad a la que pertenecen. Hasta ahora, cerca de 8,000 maestros y más de 900 escuelas en once países han participado en AME, y en la certificación del programa, reconocido por autoridades educacionales de Costa Rica, República Dominicana, México, Perú, y Venezuela.
UNA-USA
La Asociación de las Naciones Unidas de los Estados Unidos de América es una organización sin fines de lucro dedicada a inculcar conciencia y encontrar apoyo para los ideales y el trabajo vital de las Naciones Unidas. Sus campañas humanitarias y educativas, incluyendo la enseñanza en escuelas urbanas, limpieza de campos minados, y proveer apoyo basado en la escuela para niños que viven en comunidades afectadas por el VIH/SIDA en Africa, permiten que las personas tengan un impacto global a nivel local.
